Operating area:

Essex Scouting covers the whole of the County of Essex as well as the unitary authorities of Southend and Thurrock.  The County is structured into 20 Districts and some 250 local Groups, with a Group consisting of one or more of three younger Sections.  Explorer Scouts are District based and Scout Network are County based.

Aims/Objectives:

The purpose of Scouting is to help young people achieve their full physical, intellectual, social and spiritual potential as individuals, as responsible citizens and as members of their local, nationally and international communities.

Age Range:

Beaver Scouts 5¾-8½, Cub Scouts 7½-11, Scouts 10-14½ Explorer Scouts 13½-18½

Scout Network 17½-25½.

Young people may also join Explorer Scouting to be young leaders for the younger sections with a specific young leader's training programme.

From age 18 one can be a leader or administrator as well as join the Scout Active Support team whose members work in a support role in the Movement.

Specific Interests:

Scouting is co-educational and open to all.  It has a progression of training, activities and awards built into the programme, which is split into five main Sections that young people can join at any time.      The activities in the Sections are many and varied, for the young ones it is action packed fun both indoors and out; the older youngsters may attempt more adventurous activities, camps, hike, and expeditions, along with a training programme of many useful skills. The older members work in a self-programming structure covering social, training and community service activities.

Several of the Scout Groups have a bias towards sea activities and a few have a bias towards air activities. It is our policy, where practical, to take special needs youngsters into our mainstream programme but to meet a need we have a few special Groups around the County and a blind Section in Chelmsford.                                                                                                                                                         We are an operating authority for the Duke of Edinburgh's Award Scheme.

We have 13 campsites and activity centres within the County most of which are available for use by other youth groups.  Details can be found on the website.

Other relevant information:

Essex Scouting continues to show a steady increase in membership with 15,200 young people in membership in 2010 with 4000+ volunteer adults as leaders and supporters.

Scouting's adult training scheme is second to none and is recognised by the Institute of Leadership & Management for direct membership at Associate and Member levels. The trainers training scheme is also at a very high standard and is recognised by the Institute of Training and Occupational Learning for membership at all levels.
